Hjarðarholtskirkja is a beautiful wooden cross-church located in the Laxárdalur Valley of West Iceland. Built in 1904, it was designed by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, who became Architect of State. Inside one finds a striking carved wooden baptismal featuring a silver bowl (1964). Besides its interior beauty, this church has majestic surroundings and a historical and cultural background. According to the Laxdæla Saga, Ólafur Peacock built his farm here and his son Kjartan, the main character of the saga, was born in this place. Furthermore, the area was haunted by the ghost of Viga-Hrappur Sumarliðason. Ólafur eventually exhumed his remains to stop the hauntings.
