Located in the middle of the Tiber River, the Isola Tiberina is a special and unique landmark of Rome. This breath-taking boat-shaped island is about 270 metres long and 67 metres wide. For centuries, the island has been associated with medicine and healing since it was home to the ancient Temple of Asclepius—the Greek god of healing—as well as other shrines dedicated to other gods and goddesses. In the 16th century, the Fatebenefratelli Hospital was founded on the island, as well as the church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola in 998 by Emperor Otto III. Today, the island remains a piece of history, offering visitors an amazing view of both sides of the banks, along with a pleasant stroll around its garden.
