Teide is a volcanic mountain located on the Spanish island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Its summit is the highest point in Spain, and stands at an impressive 3,715 m (12,188 ft). It is the third-highest volcano in the world when measured from sea level to the peak of its base, making it the tenth highest island in the world. Teide is an active volcano, and has been subject to several destructive eruptions over its 170,000 year history. The UNESCO World Heritage Site spans 18,900 hectares and boasts an astronomical observatory, a popular spot for tourists.
