The stunning Firth of Lorn hugs the edge of the town giving the bay an almost perfect horseshoe shape with the Isle of Mull seen across the water. The town has a rich archaeological history that dates back to the Mesolithic period and numerous landmarks like Dunollie Castle, McCaig's Tower, and Glencruitten House have regularly attracted tourists for centuries. During World War II Oban was an important base of the British Army while the town also became a hub for Caledonian MacBrayne ferries after the 1950s. All of these come together make Oban a fantastic place to visit and explore.
